ABSTRACT

Julia M. Carson (July 8, 1938-December 15, 2007) was the first woman and African-American to represent Indianapolis and the second African-American (after Katie Hall of Gary, Indiana) to represent Indiana in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1997 until her death.  Prior to entering Congress, Carson, a Democrat, served as a state representative and a state senator in the Indiana General Assembly and as Center Township trustee in Marion County, Indiana.

The collection is composed primarily of Carson’s records from her years in Congress, including biographical materials, committee records, legislative records, subject files, caucus records, meetings and events records, speeches, correspondence, press releases, newsletters, and flyers, office administration records, and audiovisual materials.

ABSTRACT

University College was created in May, 1997 by action of the IUPUI Faculty Council to help beginning undergraduate students acclimate to higher education.  University College grew out of previous efforts such as the Undergraduate Education Center (UEC), which developed out of efforts to improve retention of entering undergraduate students.  Significant grant funding afforded the implementation of curricula and student support structures to improve student success.

Records include correspondence, reports, grant application files, meeting minutes, and other materials.

ABSTRACT

In 1972 the Buildings Services Department reported to the Vice Chancellor/Dean for Administrative Affairs.  Later, the department came under the supervision of the Director of Physical Plant.  By 1992, the department was named Campus Facilities Services and reported to the Vice Chancellor for Administration.

Records include operation and maintenance manuals for buildings and building equipment for various campus buildings.

ABSTRACT

The English Department of IUPUI was formed from departments of both Indiana University-Indianapolis Downtown Campus and the Purdue University-Indianapolis Extension.  The department became a unit in the School of Liberal Arts on its formation in 1972.  Includes records of the Indiana Teachers of Writing.

ABSTRACT

Indiana University is a state-financed university created by the State of Indiana as the Indiana State Seminary in 1820.  In the late nineteenth- and twentieth centuries IU established extension campuses in several Indiana cities, including Indianapolis (see UA-059 Indiana University-Downtown Campus Records).  The Indiana University-Indianapolis campus became IUPUI when it merged with Purdue University-Indianapolis Extension in 1969.

Records include correspondence, minutes, reports, bulletins, publications, and other records.
