Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument photograph, ca. 1895

The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, located on the Circle in downtown Indianapolis, was conceived as a memorial to Hoosiers who served in the Civil War. Bruno Schmitz of Koblenz, Germany, won the international competition for the design of the monument. Schmitz came to Indianapolis to supervise the construction of the monument. Rudolf Schwarz, an Austrian sculptor who had worked with Schmitz on projects in Europe, sculpted statues of soldiers for the monument.
