The German-English Independent School was started in 1859 by members of the German-American community who, unhappy with the poor public schools of the time, wanted a school that would preserve German culture but would not engage in religious education in the manner of German parochial schools. A school building, designed by Diedrich Bohlen, was erected at 230 East Maryland Street. The school closed in 1882 when the high cost of running the school and the introduction of instruction in German in the public schools under an 1869 state law eroded the school's support within the German-American community.
