Freethinker Society of Indianapolis minutes, 1870-1890

At its peak, the Freethinkers Society in Indianapolis included about 150 members, many of whom were also members of the Turnverein. In addition to holding social meetings, the Freethinkers sponsored a Sunday School and conducted funerals. While they were viewed suspiciously by conventional religious organizations, the Freethinker Society was undoubtedly the most active intellectual organization in Indianapolis for a number of years.
