University Library welcomes journalists and representatives of the media to Indiana's leading public academic library. The current building opened in 1993 and was designed by renowned architect Edward Larrabee Barnes. Envisioned as one of the most technologically advanced libraries in the country, the University Library serves approximately 30,000 undergraduate and professional students on the IUPUI campus as well as visitors from the community.

Visiting journalists are asked to review the information below and are welcome to contact the library's external relations and communications office located in the dean's administration suite (room 1112) for a press kit and more information. Media assistance is available from Kindra Orr or Joshua Sullivan.   • Working press on news and feature assignments, including credentialed student media, which require them to work inside the library building are encouraged to work as unobtrusively as possible while being mindful of library patrons and the academic work taking place in the building. Although not required, working press are encouraged to check in at the circulation desk and make library security aware of their presence. Library staff members are happy to provide assistance and answer questions about the library, but may not be able to give on-camera interviews or make formal statements without appropriate authorization. Press kits, media escorts and spokesperson statements are available from the library’s external relations office. Some areas of the library, such as employee offices and secured work areas, may not be accessible without prior approval. Classes and meetings in progress should not be interrupted. Working press should keep credentials and identification visible while in the library.
  • Students in the Indiana University system or any school, college or university are welcome to do photography and video work in the library in connection with their academic coursework, school media outlet, or any pursuit that is not disruptive to the general academic work of library patrons. Credentialed student media should follow the library’s recommendations for working press. While not required, all persons doing photography or video in the library are encouraged to check-in at the circulation desk. Some areas of the library, such as employee offices and secured work areas, may not be accessible without prior approval. Classes and meetings in progress should not be interrupted. All IUPUI and Indiana University system students are expected to follow the university’s guidelines for student rights, responsibilities and conduct at all times.
  • University units and offices working on photography or video projects, such as marketing, promotional and training materials, are encouraged to contact the library’s administrative office in advance whenever possible. When advance notice is not possible, university photographers and videographers and encouraged to check in with security at the second floor circulation desk. The library encourages university employees and/or contract photographers to have JagTags, official office nametags, university apparel, or an appropriate credential visible while conducting photography in the building so they may be easily identified by students and visitors. The IUPUI University Library is a public library, and photographers should be mindful of the fact that many library patrons may not be university students, and that some patrons of the library may be Indiana resident patrons or students under the age of eighteen. University units and offices are responsible for collection of any releases that may be appropriate, and the library strongly encourages good record-keeping practices in connection with photographing university students.
  • Freelance photographers working on self-assignments or speculative projects may conduct photography inside the library in keeping with the library’s general guidelines and code of conduct, and/or the university’s guidelines for student rights, responsibilities and conduct. Freelance photographers and videographers should be careful not to create situations where they may be easily confused with working press, and are encouraged to check-in at the circulation desk to make library security aware of their presence. Individual and freelance photographers may contact the library’s administrative office for assistance and additional information.
  • All visitors conducting photography and/or videography in the library should be mindful of the academic work being done by library patrons and should work to be as unobtrusive as possible. Photography and videography is permitted inside of the library, and anyone taking pictures or recording video should be prepared to identify themselves and answer general questions if approached by security or library staff. In the unlikely event of a serious disruption, patron complaint, or policy violation, individuals may be asked to discontinue photography or videography.
  • Interview requests should be made to the library’s administrative office or external relations office. University Library has approximately 30 faculty librarians and a staff of about 100 with a wide range of experience and expertise. Interviews should be scheduled in advance whenever possible. Library staff will accept interviews as their schedules permit.
  • Equipment loading and unloading through the library’s service entry may be arranged by contacting library security or the administrative office in advance. A freight elevator is available for photographers and crews with large equipment, cases or carts. Persons using the service entry and/or freight elevator may need to be escorted by a library staff member.
  • Special requests such as for access to restricted areas, resetting furniture or temporarily closing sections of the building for a photography project should be made in advance to the library’s administrative office or external relations office. The library can generally accommodate special requests with reasonable notice, with greater advance notice required for complicated requests. When available, conference rooms may be used as temporary workspace for photo crews.
