SGAS was established in 1968 as an international professional association of individuals and institutions interested in the field of German-American studies. It is registered in the State of Ohio as a non-profit organization.

• 2009 New Ulm, Minnesota, April 16–19, 2009, Call for Papers, Symposium Schedule, Registration Form

  SGAS in New Ulm : A curiosity: We are meeting on April 17, 18, 19 – the numbers of the Roman legions lost at the battle between Arminius and Varus in 9 A. D.

  In 9 A.D., the 17th, 18th & 19th Roman legions and their auxiliary troops under command of Publius Quinctilius Varus vanished in the boggy wilds of Germania. They died singly and by the hundreds over several days in a carefully planned ambush led by Arminius --- a Roman-trained German warrior ---  determined to stop Rome's advance east beyond the Rhine River. By the time it was over, some 25,000 men, women, and children were dead and the course of European history had been forever altered. "Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions!" Emperor Augustus agonized aloud when he learned of the devastating loss. As the decades slipped past, the location of one of the western world's most important battlefields was lost to history for two millenia.

SGAS publishes research findings and news in the areas of its interest as a public service.

SGAS encourages the production and dissemination of educational materials in its areas of interest as a public service.

SGAS assists researchers, teachers, and students interested in the German element in North America.

SGAS works to improve cross-cultural relations between German-speaking countries and North America, and work to foster contacts between researchers in the areas of its interest.

The Society publishes a quarterly newsletter and a yearbook to further its purposes. The Newsletter, while containing informative articles concerning the Society, also contains news on the activities of other organizations with similar purposes and short articles on German-Americana.

The The Yearbook contains articles in English and German on German-American history, literature, and culture. It also contains a Book Review section edited by Tim Holian, University of Wisconsin-Waukesha, and the annual Bibliography of German-Americana, edited by Giles R. and Dolores Hoyt, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, assisted by the Bibliographic Committee of the Society.

The Society aims to cooperate with organizations and institutions with similar purposes and serves as an umbrella organization for them. Among its affiliates are the Max-Kade Institutes at the University of Kansas, Lawrence; Pennsylvania State University; and the Max Kade German-American Center at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Publication of the Yearbook is supported in part by the Hall Center, University of Kansas.

The Society engages in a number of special activities. The SGAS Educational Task Force has prepared guidelines for the introduction of German-American studies into the curricula of schools and colleges. The Society was responsible for the idea and the successful implementation of the national German-American Day.
